December 2025
We were thrilled to host a highly engaging and insightful Parent Talk in topic "Autism Spectrum Disorders: Effective Communication Strategies and Social Skill Development" with Resource Speaker, Ma. Zarah Bulalaque-Delacy, MAED, RSLP, Prompt Certified-Level 1 and Hanen Certified Therapist- ITTT.
The talk focused on transforming everyday family life into powerful, natural learning opportunities for children. The core message was simple yet profound: the most effective way to foster growth isn't by adding extra tasks to your day, but by turning existing, simple routines and interactions into powerful learning moments. This approach minimizes stress for parents and maximizes engagement for kids.
1. Mastering Non-Verbal Communication and Observational Skills
The session kicked off with a unique, practical activity designed to illustrate the diverse ways children learn and communicate:
2. The Crucial OWL Strategy: Observe, Wait, and Listen
A central, game-changing tool introduced was the OWL Strategy (Observe, Wait, Listen). This technique encourages parents to slow down and allow the child to lead the interaction, thereby deepening connection and learning:
We explored a real-life scenario: "You just finished laundry and you see your child playing with shapes." How do you apply OWL? Instead of asking, "What shape is that?" (testing knowledge), the parent is encouraged to Observe the child stacking blocks, Wait for the child to look up, and then Listen to any sound or verbal effort before offering a reflective comment like, "Wow, you made a tall tower!" (expanding the interaction).
3. Understanding the Four Types of Communicators
To help parents tailor their interactions, we introduced the four distinct categories of young communicators. Recognizing where a child fits helps parents use the most effective strategies to encourage language and social development:
Parents were engaged by being asked to identify which category best describes their own child, fostering a deeper understanding of their child's unique developmental path.
Thank you once again to all the parents who participated and demonstrated their commitment to fostering powerful learning environments at home. We are confident that by applying these simple, routine-based strategies, our students will thrive!
