Science Month Celebration: SPED Beginners

Science Comes Alive: The Sensory Exploration Culmination!

Our recent Science Month culminated in a truly immersive and delightful event: the Sensory Exploration activity! Designed to bring the five senses to life, this hands-on experience saw students actively engaging with and investigating a rich variety of materials prepared by our dedicated teachers. The goal was simple: to learn science by doing, manipulating, and experiencing.

Exploring the Five Senses
Students moved through different stations, using their senses to observe, test, and understand the world around them in a scientific context.

Sight: The Art of Color and Light

The sense of sight was put to the test in a vibrant color mixing station. Students became young chemists, exploring primary and secondary colors by carefully combining colored water. They were thrilled to witness firsthand the magic of science, such as mixing yellow and blue to create green, and red and blue to create purple, learning about light, pigments, and observation skills in the process.

In a dedicated section, students also got to play with light! They used improvised paper flashlights and a plastic aquarium to search for and identify different sea animals. This activity demonstrated how light and shadow affect visibility and allowed students to practice their observation skills in a creative, new light.

Taste: A Culinary Experiment

This was a favorite! Students cautiously sampled different items, using a wheel to choose what they would try, to identify the four main taste categories: sweet, sour, bitter, and salty. They explored the sour kick of calamansi and lemon juice, the sweetness of sugar and orange juice, and the bitter notes of dark chocolate and chocolate drink. This activity sparked great discussions about taste buds, the chemical properties of different foods, and how our sense of taste helps us determine what's safe (and delicious!) to eat.

Smell: The Science of Scent

Students were made acutely aware of their sense of smell as they investigated various scents. They closed their eyes and carefully smelled a range of aromatic items, including calming lavender, sharp coffee, warm cinnamon and ginger, bright lemon, and sweet vanilla. This station highlighted how our sense of smell contributes to memory, can influence taste, and helps us identify substances in our environment.

Touch: Texture Investigation

The sense of touch was fully engaged as students manipulated various objects to feel their textures. They got to explore and describe simple contrasts: the hard, rough feel of rock; the sticky sensation of glue; the smooth, tiny grains of salt; the bumpy, solid feel of beans; and the slippery, wet sensation of slimy materials. This tactile approach was vital, as it boosts fine motor skills, expands descriptive vocabulary, and helps students better process and retain information by engaging them physically with the material's properties. Students learned that the way a material feels—its physical property—helps us understand what it is.

Hearing: Sound and Vibration

The Hearing Station turned into a lively mini-orchestra! Students got to play and listen to the distinct sounds produced by different instruments, including drums, maracas, wooden and glass xylophones, and bells. This allowed them to understand that sound is created by vibration and that the material and structure of an object affect the pitch and volume of the sound it makes.

Overall, the students didn't just passively observe; they actively engaged their senses to learn. Their delight was evident in every station, proving that hands-on, multi-sensory experiences are a powerful tool for education. By manipulating instruments, mixing colors, and discerning flavors, students were able to truly understand how their senses work and their critical role in scientific observation. This event transformed abstract ideas into tangible, exciting discoveries.

A huge thank you to all the teachers who poured their creativity and effort into making this truly exceptional event happen! Great job, everyone!

And hats off to our Amazing Program Coordinators: Teacher Pam, Teacher Stephen, Teacher Je, Teacher Lina, and Teacher Fame for organizing such a successful and meaningful event!
